Some of the New CommCare Programs We Launched Around the World

Organizations around the world turned to CommCare to put data and decision-support tools in the hands of frontline workers. From cancer survivorship in the United States to the banana value chain in Senegal, here is a look at a few of the new programs we kicked off with our partners.

Grassroot Soccer · Africa

ADOLS: data tools for adolescent health Coaches

Grassroot Soccer uses the power of soccer to educate and mobilize at-risk youth around their biggest health challenges, having reached more than 13 million young people since 2002. We partnered with GRS to design, build, and test a CommCare app and two-way SMS solution for its young-adult Coaches, starting with 50 mentors and aiming to scale to around 800 while improving real-time data and program quality.

ETHICS Lesotho: scaling a client-tracking tool

Baylor’s Children’s Foundation Lesotho worked with us to expand a CommCare-based client-tracking tool into the final two districts before national coverage. Supporting more than 500 mobile users, the app helps MCH, TB, and HIV departments track appointments, send SMS reminders, transfer patients between facilities, and report on key outcomes.

RTI International · Cambodia

Integrated Early Childhood Development Activity

We partnered with RTI on a baseline survey and a service-delivery app for USAID’s five-year IECD Activity, supporting the Royal Government of Cambodia’s work for children under five. Up to 250 Village Health Volunteers use CommCare for developmental milestone screening, home visits, and group parenting sessions, enabling early identification of children at risk of developmental delays or disabilities.

CDC Foundation & CDC · Burkina Faso, Chad & Cameroon

Pregnancy Outcome & Death Surveillance (PODS)

For this CDC Foundation and CDC pilot, we built an integrated mobile solution for community and facility-based pregnancy and mortality surveillance in Burkina Faso and Chad, with around 50 users per country. We also adapted our online learning and certification program so an epidemiology institution in Cameroon can build its own data-collection tools, helping replace paper and move toward real-time, actionable data.

EGPAF-Malawi & PEPFAR · Malawi

Strengthening Malawi’s HIV response

Supporting EGPAF-Malawi’s PEPFAR-funded work, we took an active role in designing and testing a pilot mobile solution to improve contact tracing, promote testing of at-risk children and partners, and support community follow-up for those who fall out of care. The pilot launched at five sites with five implementing partners, with a path to scaling across a 2,700-person testing and tracing workforce.

INDDEX24: dietary data collection

We designed and built the INDDEX24 mobile app, a flexible tool for collecting dietary data anywhere through 24-hour recalls. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture adopted it for Nigeria’s national food consumption survey, with Dimagi providing tailored support to a team of nearly 300 survey personnel and enumerators. Technical advisory & capacity building

We prepared and hosted six full-day sessions, three remote and three in-person, for around 20 CRS ICT team members from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The training built case management and advanced app-building skills for CRS projects spanning emergency response, agriculture, health, nutrition, HIV & TB, education, and microfinance, with a focus on stronger indicator reporting and M&E.

Baobab Senegal & UNCDF · Senegal

CommBanane advisory service

CommeBanane, a digital advisory service for Senegal’s banana value chain, has already reached more than 472 smallholder farmers, helping them monitor business records and access tailored credit. In this new scale-up phase, Baobab brought us on to strengthen its teams through an “Advisory Service” designed to serve 45 additional cooperatives and reach 2,250 farmers.

UNDP · Cameroon

Financial education for frontline workers

Under Cameroon’s economic resilience support project (PAREC), part of the national strategy for inclusive finance, we were selected to build a mobile app for frontline workers. It delivers financial training to beneficiaries, manages savings-group activity monitored by microfinance institutions, and raises COVID-19 awareness, focused on vulnerable populations including women and young people. The project aims to benefit more than 20,000 people in Cameroon.

COVID-19 support in Jharkhand

Working with Taiwan ICDF and partners, we deployed a triage and screening app for intake personnel at primary health centers, alongside a digital conversational training agent for health workers. Encouraged by early success, the program doubled its reach from 80 to 160 health workers and added workflows to help PHCs meet national Infection Prevention and Control standards.

SurvivorCare Phase II

Long-term cancer survivors from low-resourced and minority settings face real barriers as they move from oncology-based to primary and community care. Building on a successful Phase I prototype, this NIH Phase II SBIR project funds a fully functional SurvivorCare web app, validated through pilot testing with patient navigators and patients served by two large urban hospitals.

CommCare Companion Application

Extending earlier work with the Resilience Collaborative at the J&J Center for Health Worker Innovation, we built a CommCare Companion app that delivers 82 resilience messages to community health workers over six months. A public template version is available in English and Hindi, paired with a content-adaptation working group and a guidebook so organizations can localize the messages for their own contexts.

Empleando Futuros: keeping youth engaged

For a youth-empowerment and anti-migration program across seven Honduran municipalities, we built an SMS-based system that sends automated, tailored messages drawn from each participant’s status in the Moodle learning platform. Launching as a 700-user pilot, the goal is to lift course completion and employment while reducing attrition and migration among the program’s 2,500 participants.

YUVAA: family-planning decision support

Partnering with Pathfinder on the Youth Voices for Agency and Access (YUVAA) program, we built a digital agent that engages newly married couples and first-time parents as they make decisions about family planning. YUVAA aims to reach 600,000 young couples across ten districts in Bihar and Maharashtra, encouraging informed choice and healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy.

Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby

For USAID’s Healthy Mother Healthy Baby Activity, we built a suite of CommCare apps across the 12 districts of Tajikistan’s Khatlon region, covering facility assessment, training and supervision, KAP surveys on WASH and nutrition, and a maternal and child health tracker with gravidogram and growth-monitoring components. Data flows into DHIS2 and the Republican Center for Medical Statistics to speed up decision-making. Browse the HMHB knowledge hub.
