The Challenge

Funders want stronger results across their portfolios. Grantees want the technology and skills to deliver them. The support in between rarely matches: each organization buys different tools, reports different indicators, and starts over when the grant ends.

Grantees want technology support

Nonprofit leaders rank technology among their most requested areas of funder support.

Every grantee reports differently

Different tools and indicators make portfolio results hard to compare.

One-off tools do not last

Software without training fades when the funding ends.

The evidence

Funders and grantees see the gap differently

When the Center for Effective Philanthropy asked both sides what grantees most need, technology was the clearest blind spot.

#4

Information technology ranked the fourth most requested area of support by nonprofit leaders, after fundraising, staffing, and communications.

15%

Yet only 15% of funders recognized technology as something grantees want to strengthen, versus 65% for fundraising.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions, answered

The Cohort Model

What is the CommCare Cohort Model?
A funding model in which Dimagi works with a group of your grantees in parallel. Each organization gets a dedicated Dimagi project manager, hands-on training, and its own CommCare application, while the funder gets aligned reporting across the whole cohort.
How long does a cohort take?
Cohorts run from 3 to 12 months depending on scope, with grantees typically launching their first application within the first few months.
Do grantees own their apps and data?
Yes. Each grantee owns its CommCare project and its data, and because the platform is no-code, their own team can maintain and extend the application long after the engagement ends.

Reporting, evidence & cost

Can we see results across our whole portfolio?
Yes. Dimagi helps the cohort align on shared indicators and can build a consolidated dashboard, giving funders comparable, real-time data for annual reports and board updates.
Is there evidence that this works?
Yes. CommCare's evidence base includes more than 130 studies, including 120 peer-reviewed publications, and cohort alumni include some of the longest-running digital frontline programs in the sector.
What does it cost to equip a portfolio?
Cohort pricing depends on the number of grantees and the scope of support. CommCare's affordable plans start at $100 per month per organization, and Dimagi discounts software and services for cohorts. Get in touch for a tailored proposal.
