Rigorous research is indispensable to building better solutions for global development challenges. So is translating that research from studies to programs at scale. With this in mind, Dimagi, UCSF, and Yale School of Public Health came together to launch the CommCare Grant for Advancing Frontline Research.
Why translation is the hard part
A rigorous frontline research study can produce a clean result and still struggle to influence delivery. The gap between an evidence base and a working program is rarely a science problem; it is usually a systems problem, with the protocol, the workflow, the data pipeline, and the team’s capacity each pulling in different directions. Digital tools that meet researchers where they actually work, in the field, on the bench, in supervision, are part of how that gap closes.
The CommCare Grant for Advancing Frontline Research
The grant supports research teams using CommCare to design, deliver, and study frontline interventions. Selected awardees receive funding plus Dimagi technical support, with the explicit aim of producing both research evidence and a working program model others can adopt.

Panelists from UCSF and Yale walk through real frontline-research challenges, from consent workflows that respect participant time, to study-design choices that survive contact with a real clinic, to the operational gymnastics that turn protocol fidelity into a strength rather than a bottleneck.
