Too often, data collection programs yield valuable data to only a few stakeholders at the HQ level. With data democracy, more people gain access to actionable insights, unlocking more value from program data. In this session, World Vision International Nepal’s Rajeev Dhungel and independent CommCare consultant Raneem Safi walk through the analytics ecosystem they built around CommCare to do exactly that.

The HQ-only insight problem

Field teams collect program data, HQ analyzes it, and a single set of dashboards reports up. That works, right up until the moment a frontline supervisor needs to know which households were missed this week and the answer takes three weeks to arrive. Data democracy is the design choice that says: the people who can act on the data should see the data, and as early in the pipeline as possible.

What World Vision Nepal built

The team layered on top of CommCare an analytics ecosystem that connects raw form and case data to role-specific views, so a supervisor sees one thing, a district lead sees another, and HQ still has its rollup. The pieces include CommCare’s Odata integration, a curated set of program dashboards, and a governance model for who can see what.

Lessons for other implementing partners

Three things from the conversation generalize: start from the decision, not the dashboard; treat governance as a feature, not a constraint; and pilot a single role’s view to completion before fanning out.
